关于“河北工程大学”等的译法说明

 目前，“河北工程大学”有三种译法：Hebei University of Engineering、Hebei Engineering University和Hebei Gongcheng University。现比较如下：

一、关于Hebei University of Engineering。这种译法不值得提倡，因为: ①它与汉语意思不一致，极易被人理解为“工程(学)方面的河北大学” 或“属于工程(学)所有的河北大学”。 ②容易与河北大学相混淆。③不符合现代英语发展的特点。省去“of” ，用名词作定语，是现代英语发展的一大特点（尽管“of”仍然使用）。④不符合学校的发展方向。2006年2月14日《教育部关于同意河北工程学院正式更名为河北工程大学的通知》（教发函〔2006〕20号）中第一项明确指出：“河北工程大学系多科性本科学校，以实施普通本科教育为主…”。没有规定该校“以工科为主”或“以工程为主”。.事实上，该校是一个以“理、工、农、医、文、法、经、管”等多学科协调发展的综合性大学。退一步讲，既使学校“以工科为主”，这种译法也是不值得提倡的。

二、关于Hebei Engineering University。这种译法与前一种译法相比，符合现代英语发展的特点，特别是在翻译其所包含的下属系、专业时，减少使用of，层次更分明。但有其致命的缺点，即Engineering很难囊括该校的所有专业，如果连文学院的“英语专业”都属于
